Author’s Biography
Jozef Banáš, born on 27 September 1948 in Bratislava, is an exceptional figure in Slovak culture and politics. As the son of a poor family from Čadca and a saleswoman from Bratislava, he grew up in a multilingual environment, where, in addition to Slovak, he mastered German and Hungarian. His youth was marked by sports activities and education at the Secondary Industrial School of Electrical Engineering and later at the University of Economics in Bratislava.
Banáš’s career is diverse – from working as a commercial officer to holding significant diplomatic posts in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (ČSSR) and later the Czechoslovak Federative Republic (ČSFR), including serving as the director of the Press and Information Center in Bratislava and as an envoy at embassies in Germany and Austria. Politically active, he held positions in the National Council of the Slovak Republic and was also the vice-chairman of the Committee for European Integration.
In the field of literature, Banáš began his career in screenwriting, with his works encompassing television and theater scripts as well as political comedies. He made his literary debut with a collection of short stories and essays that reflect his rich professional experiences and personal perspectives. His books, such as Zóna nadšenia (The Zone of Enthusiasm) and Zastavte Dubčeka! (Stop Dubček!), are frequently acclaimed and popular not only in Slovakia but also abroad.
Jozef Banáš is not only a writer but also a commentator and public intellectual, whose works and opinions resonate in many circles. His contribution to Slovak literature and politics is invaluable, making him one of the most prominent figures of contemporary Slovakia.
